Caroline Bowles was born at Buckland Cottage, Lymington, Hampshire, the daughter of an officer in the East India Company. After her parents died, and after suffering from dishonesty of her guardian, her home was saved by an annuity from a friend. Determined to support herself, she took to writing and sent the poem Ellen Fitzarthur: A Metrical Tale to Robert Southey (see entry). It was published in 1820, the year that Southey and Caroline met. He proposed a partnership on a poem titled Robin Hood, but the rhymeless stanza style did not suit Caroline. The friendship continued, and in 1839 Caroline married the ailing Southey and moved to Keswick, where she was detested by her step-children. When Southey died, she returned to Lymington and wrote nothing further. A crown pension was conferred upon her two years before she died. She was buried in Lymington.
